The Tigers ran out comprehensive 4-0 winners in their first pre-season friendly tonight at the Roundwood Sports Complex at Parkgate FC.
Tomas Poole netted the first goal of Craig Denton’s tenure when he poked in Jamie Price’s corner at the back stick.
Goalscorer then turned provider as Poole beat the Parkgate centre-back to the ball and squared it across for Craig Mitchell who slammed the ball home past the keeper.
Kyle Jordan then returned to old goalscoring habits as he latched onto Craig Mitchell’s through-ball and neatly stroked the ball past the keeper.
He then also netted from the spot on the half hour mark.
The second period was a more professional approach as the team was mostly changed to a younger side.
Both teams enjoyed a lot of possession with little chances. The returning Connor Brunt nodded home Connor Smythe’s dinked cross however he was judged to be offside by the linesman.
Denton had this to say after the game;
‘I thought we stuck to the plan of what we wanted to do. I thought we controlled the game, the first forty-five minutes we started like a house on fire and hopefully going further into pre-season we start seeing longer periods of time where we was like that. I am happy with the result and was happy to see players be tested. We looked like we ran out of steam towards the end but yeah delighted. We’ve had a couple of lads in Deegan and Keegan who did really well tonight. We used all three goalkeepers to give them a bit of time on the pitch so overall a good pre-season friendly for us’
‘No matter if we play Parkgate, Cleethorpes or Sheffield United we will still go into the game on Saturday with the right attitude and professionalism and do what we do. We know that Cleethorpes will be a stronger outfit than Parkgate, I’m not being disrespectful to Parkgate but they’re up there for a reason. They’re going to be strong, more powerful but also more of a test for us Saturday to see if our players can step up to it’.
‘Like tonight it is important to see fans travelling home and away to support us, especially in pre-season so thank you to those who travelled tonight and also to those who’ll be travelling to Cleethorpes. Have a good day and a few beers when they come down on the train and hopefully we’ll put in a performance to be excited about’
