The Tigers had to be patient to eventually see off visitors Goole at Sandy Lane, a wonderful first half goal from the lively Matt Sykes opened the scoring and it wasn’t until the last knockings of this one that Connor Brunt wrapped up a comfortable three points for the home side.
Goole had a man sent off late on and had chances of their own in the second half, most of which Dave Reay stood up to keeping his second successive league clean sheet. In the end it was two moments of individual quality that won the day and earned Tigers the all important three points to go fifth in the table with four games in hand on the leaders.
Denton said afterwards ‘Our aim is just to win the game which we’ve gone and done. Goole came here and I thought they looked a better side than when we played them on the opening day, they were more organised and had a few new players. It certainly wasn’t the best we’ve played today, I felt if we could get that goal and get Gooles backs against the wall then we could of gone on to get another two or three but in fairness a 2-0 score-line is probably an honest reflection of the game. Our lads dug in and showed resilience in what we wanted to do, yes we were quite direct but I felt that worked today and we came off the pitch with three points which is always the focus’.
