Craig Denton has opted to use the youth route in order to bolster the first team squad.
Under 19’s graduates Deegan Atherton, James Gamble, Sam Jones and Jack Charlesworth will all be in and around the squad for the Tigers’ league game against Albion Sports.
Deegan Atherton has been involved at the club since the start of the season when he joined the club from Rotherham United where he was a frequent feature in the Championship side’s reserve team.
Atherton, who mostly operates as a right back or centre half, impressed last Saturday as he helped the Tigers keep a clean sheet in their last-minute victory over Penistone Church.
James Gamble is another who will be recognised from his involvement in pre-season. Since then he has sought game time away at Harworth Colliery and Rainworth Miners Welfare as well as putting in some excellent displays for the under 19’s.
Gamble is a goalkeeper who played for Sheffield FC as a youth player before going on to star for Retford United as their number one.
Sam Jones is a full back who is excellent on the ball when he flies down the right flank.
Jones enjoyed success last season as he won the under 19’s North Midlands Development League with Sheffield FC under 19’s.
Jack Charlesworth is a midfielder and has been a pivotal part of the under 19’s central core.
Charlesworth was part of the Handsworth under 18’s team that won the league and cup double last season. He has also featured for Parramore’s reserve squad this season.
Craig Denton had the following to say on the call ups:
“I am a big believer of the progression route into the first team.
“It doesn’t matter if you are in the junior sections because the transition is to go into the under 19’s before making that step up to the first team.
“As a club we are offering this route and we give the expectations of a big Northern Counties East League side like Worksop Town. We want to win games and win promotion, so the balance needs to be right.
“I think the under 19’s can visually see that this process is there for them to take advantage of.
“We brought Deegan Atherton into the club in pre-season. We felt he needed a bit more game time which he got in the under 19’s.
“James Gamble is another who represented the club in pre-season, but he has been out on loan and in the under 19’s to get more playing time and develop. He is a player we want to get involved.
“Finally, Jack Charlesworth and Sam Jones are making the call up. They are a few who have impressed me so far and have made that progression we have been mentioning.
“it is good for the youngsters to see where their development can lead to. It also allows them the opportunity to impress when we have an injury or suspension.
“It will help us as a club to promote from in-house instead of searching and bringing more players from other clubs.”
Under 19’s manager Aiden Spowage gives us more of an insight to the players who might be unknown to the Worksop supporters:
“Charlesworth has been performing consistently well with our 19’s and has got his deserved call up from Dents.
“He is a box-to-box midfielder who isn’t afraid to get stuck in, get forward and chip in with goals of his own. He has already fired in three goal of the season contenders!
“Jack rarely gives the ball away and is always looking forward to make his pass. He is also our dead ball specialist.
“Sam Jones is another consistent performer and never stops running!
“He came in as a right-back, but we play him as a wing-back due to his attacking talents.
“His new role suits him, and you can tell by his performances which have influenced our good results.
“They are two great lads with good attitudes that will go far in the game.
“All the best lads!”
