Matthew Sykes has been voted Supporters’ January Player of the Month with 51% of the votes.

Sykes missed the first game of the month against Barton Town but played in the next four, scoring six goals in the process. This included a brace away at Thackley and then a hat-trick at home against the Dennyboys 11 days later.

Sykes had this to say about the award and how important February will be for the title race.

“It’s always nice to get an accolade. I’ve been in the running before, but it feels nice to finally win it.

“More important are the results we get and it’s been quite a positive month on that front, so hopefully I can take my individual performances as well as the team performances into February.

“I’d say this month is season defining.

“We can either come out the end of it as potential title favourites and into the latter rounds of the cup, or alternatively, we could be out of the running altogether.

“I believe we’ve got enough to win the title, but hopefully we can turn this potential into match-winning performances and all-important points.”

Well done to Matt on his deserved award.
