Tigers wrap up the league campaign with a win over Swallownest FC.
Worksop created many chances throughout the game but just lacked that finishing touch that they have shown throughout the season. Fortunately, the Tigers bagged twice in the last twenty minutes to win their final game before the League Cup Final.
Swallownest almost opened the scoring just inside ten minutes into the first half. Liam Smart miscued his header back to James Gamble and Archie Goddard pounced and headed towards goal. The forward took two touches before firing goalwards, however Gamble rushed out and blocked with his feet.
It was then the Tigers’ turn to almost score. Sam Jones slipped the ball through to Alfie Dodsworth who saw his shot crash off the post and wide from an acute angle.
Positioned on the right, Jordan Lonchar showed a quick turn of pace to cut inside, but saw his effort turned behind by Williams. Following the corner, an unmarked Dodsworth headed poorly over the bar.
On the half-hour mark, Swallownest broke forward after huge amounts of pressure from the Tigers; Cole Starkey hit a long-range effort which Gamble watched all the way and caught.
The Swallownest ‘keeper was called back into the limelight minutes later. Williams got down quickly to his left to parry wide a 30-yard low-driven effort from Jack Charlesworth.
Alfie Dodsworth then went close when he dragged Sam Jones’ cross wide of the far post.
Frustrations for the home side grew as it was starting to look like it wouldn’t be their day. Ryan Dellelo glanced a Jones pinpoint cross wide of the upright, before Reegan Watkinson saw a thunderous volley from the edge cannon off the post and away to safety.
On the stroke of half-time, the Swallownest number one kept his side in the fixture with a fantastic reaction save. Bobby Thompson flicked the ball out to the right where Jones accelerated down the flank, before drilling the ball into the centre where Lonchar slammed a first-time shot towards goal, with Williams somehow managing to tip the ball over the bar.
The second half began and the trend looked set to continue when two minutes, Dodsworth swung in a free-kick from the right edge of the area which was diverted towards goal by Watkinson, however the ‘keeper never took his eyes off the ball and made yet another save.
The visitors replied with a couple of key chances of their own.
Stanton’s cross went along the edge of the box where Wood let the ball roll across his body before a volley towards goal which was caught by the ‘keeper.
Wood then made tracks from the left and hit a blistering effort which curled just wide of the far post.
Swallownest then found themselves clean through on goal as Wood slipped past Jack Shaw and accelerated towards goal. The forward attempted to take the ball around Gamble, but the shot-stopper rushed out and made a key challenge with his feet to win the ball back.
With twenty minutes to go, the stalemate was finally broken. Lonchar threaded Dodsworth through on goal, where the striker held off his marker before sharply turning and firing. The ‘keeper got down low but could only parry the ball into the path of Lonchar, who calmly tucked home the opener.
Ten minutes later, Jay Evison snatched at an effort as he smashed over Alfie Smith’s knock-down from a corner.
Dellelo came close to sealing the win as he rifled over the bar from 30 yards.
Nerves were laid to rest though, as on the stroke of full-time, the Tigers confirmed the win with a second. Dodsworth was sent through with a pinpoint through-ball by Shaw, and the prolific forward burst towards goal before stroking his shot past the keeper.
The referee wrapped up the game and the home side ended the league season on a high, sitting in third place.
We would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Under-19s over the past campaign, and we will see you in the League Cup Final!
