Deegan Atherton has had a fantastic year in his first campaign in men’s football, and has been an integral part of the Tigers’ promotion to the Northern Premier League.
Atherton was out of the team for a short period before coming back in at Penistone Church where he helped his side come away with a 1-0 victory.
Since then he has been a mainstay in the starting eleven, which saw the Tigers losing only once in the next 24 games – of those games the Tigers drew twice and won the other 22.
Atherton was thrilled with promotion.
“It feels great. We’ve got a great set of lads; no-one deserves it as much as us. The work we’ve put in is fantastic. The fans are brilliant with the support they given us, and they deserve it as well. The way the management team have got us going is great as well – it’s been a great season for everyone and we deserve it.”
This comes in a week where Deegan also won the League Cup with the Under-19s.
“It’s been excellent, probably the best week of football ever for me – it’s been brilliant. Now we need to push on and get the League Cup for the first team, a double for them and a treble for me and some of the younger lads.”
As mentioned, it has been Deegan’s first season in men’s football. The right-back mentioned the struggle to adapt at first, but has enjoyed his time back in the side.
“I played the first few games and then had some time out because I needed to get used to it, but as soon as I had a few more tastes of the first team I’ve come back and given everything I had, and it’s been tough, but I’m up for the challenge and want to do well for the team.”
He also gave a big mention the the supporters.
“It’s been fantastic to play in front of them. Situations like Bottesford Town when we were 2-0 down, they were on the side still cheering us on and kept us going. They’ve been fantastic and a big help for the lads.”
