Worksop-born centre-half Steve Wankiewicz shared his thoughts on being part of a league-winning squad for his home town team. Wankiewicz has been an integral part of a rock-solid defence for the Tigers and has contributed to gaining the seventh title in Worksop’s history.
The no-nonsense defender expressed his delight to win for his home town club, but also paid tribute to the whole squad who have all had a big part to play throughout this long and terrific run, which now spreads to 16 league wins in a row and 18 in all competitions. Another clean sheet and no danger from Albion Sports throughout the game shows how good the whole back line have been over recent months.
“Today was superb. The support we’ve had today made it feel like a home game. We had to get out of the traps which I thought we did today. I thought if we can get the early goal it would kick us on to score more, and that’s exactly what happened. It was satisfying to be from Worksop and to be a part of the history we made today. But it’s not just me, the whole squad has been terrific all season, it’s been a pleasure to be a part of a squad that, to a man, have been class all year.
“We had a couple of ups and downs at the start of the year when people had been out of the squad and, speaking from experience, it’s very difficult to get back inside a squad that’s full of class players. So you’ve got to take your chance when you get back into the team, because you never know when you might have another chance. Today, though, I thought we had a great opportunity to put a show on, and I thought we did that to perfection and it was nice to see the scenes after the game.”
