Resilient Worksop Town get past Garforth Town with a slim victory.
Worksop Town defeated Garforth Town in the penultimate league game of the season. Steve McDonnell got the only goal of the affair with a tenth minute half-volley after latching onto a ball over the top.
Craig Denton praised his side’s effort in warm conditions.
“We wanted to finish off the season with a couple of wins. We knew that the pitch was really hard and the sun was glaring out and it was a warm day, but both sets of teams had to deal with that – I thought we dealt well with that factor really well. I thought we controlled the game from start to finish. We were quite relentless going forward with our attacks and it’s fair to say that we could have been 3 or 4-0 up at half-time. I thought Garforth put us under a little bit of pressure in the second-half; their keeper made some fantastic saves, but I just thought we looked the better side today through hard work and determination. With another big following from the crowd, I think the lads deserve a big pat on the back. The league is won, but we must maintain standards and we have done that.”
“It’s really important to keep that momentum and winning mentality and with the players that we have, I think we’ll keep it up. We go out to win games and with the run that we’ve been on, we want to take it right up to the last game on the 27th. Hopefully that momentum continues and pushes us into our league cup semi-final against Hemsworth, as we’re one game away from that, and hopefully into a final at Doncaster Rovers.”
Steve McDonnell has notched four goals in his last three games. Denton expressed his gratitude to the striker’s impact since he arrived from Retford United.
“Macca [Steve McDonnell] has been great since he has come in and in the last few weeks. He picks up the ball from deep and runs at defenders which is great to see. I think Steve will be the first to admit that he needs to improve his game understanding and we will just support him in getting him more chances to work with, but he drives with the ball and gets shots off and he causes the opposition an absolute nightmare when he goes at them.”
Next up for the Tigers is Eccleshill United who travel over to Sandy Lane. We will also be lifting the NCEL Premier Division Title on that day.
Denton stressed the importance of the fans and how they should come down and support us next weekend.
“The fans have been fantastic this season and they have come out in their numbers and they deserve this celebration. It’s the last game of the season and we’d love for every Worksop Town fan to come out and clap the lads because they have been tremendous. They have won the league and been the best team in this division and have been absolutely fantastic. I’d love to see us get 1000+ down to the ground. We’ve done it before and I think the supporters will come and enjoy their day and we’ll pick up the trophy which will be the cherry on top of the cake.”
