Worksop Town manager Craig Denton shared his thoughts after his side’s 0-1 defeat to Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday.
Kingsley Adu Gyamfi scored after eight minutes, but the Tigers couldn’t find an equaliser as they fell to a defeat on their final match in August.
Denton gave his views on the performance.
Denton commented; “Our performance in the first-half was a little bit hit and miss, but I thought in the second-half we were quite relentless in what we were doing. We had a lot of chances, but our attacks were seemingly breaking down around the final third, so that’s disappointing. I don’t think we’ve worked their goalkeeper very well, we’re getting our full-backs high up the pitch, but the ball is not getting to them so the attack is breaking down. Of course, I’m bitterly disappointed with the defeat. I genuinely thought we could have got something from the game.”
“I think a point would have been fair, but at the end of the day we’ve come away with nothing. I keep trying to hammer that fact into the players that in this league you aren’t going to be given the three points easily, you have to work hard for them. Things aren’t going for us at the minute in terms of injuries but I’ll go away from this game and see where I can improve, if we have to change shape or personnel then we will do that.”
Today’s game marks the end of our first month back in the NPL and Denton discussed how he thought we have faired.
Denton continued; “Again I’m frustrated because I feel in every game we have deserved something from it. Although I can’t keep saying that but; we deserved to beat Frickley and Wisbech and we should have got something at Ilkeston and we should have got something against Kidsgrove, but we haven’t. We’ve got six points and the players and staff need to look at ourselves and think what can I bring to the game which will make us better.”
Daniel Patterson and Jermaine Palmer made their returns to Worksop Town in Saturday’s game.
Craig expressed; “I thought Patterson came on, did well, and set the tempo again. I think we’ve missed him over the last two or three games – certainly the desire and passion he brings to the team. They are two of the main reasons I wanted to bring him back, because he wants to play for Worksop Town. Jed unfortunately is going to be out for a couple of months, so hopefully Danny can come and make an impact for us.”
“I don’t think Jermaine had much service if I’m honest and the quality of the service he did receive wasn’t great. That also goes for Mettam and Mitchell too. Everyone needs to be better in that department, so we can give our centre forwards a chance of scoring. It deflated me a little bit today but we have to try and motivate the lads, they also need to find that extra 10-15% in themselves to push us on in this league.
The manager ended saying if he would be making any changes to the side for next weeks game against Carlton and how tough the game may be.
Denton stated; “We’re going to have a look in midweek and see how “Vank” [Steven Wankiewicz] is and Josh Ross has been able to do some running and ball work today so that’s promising. Again, if I have to bring in some new faces then I will if that’s what it’s going to take to strengthen us. I have to make the best decisions for this Football Club and that’s what I’ll do.”
Denton continued; “We will get them watched before Saturday, they have had a perfect start to the season in winning their first four games so it’s obviously going to be tough. We’ve got to make sure we bring our ‘A’ game against them which means tightening up at the back, making good decisions in and around the box. If we do that we can threaten any team in this league.”
