On Sunday, Scott Willis’ side opened their season with an emphatic 7-1 victory over Wath Stars JFC at Sandy Lane.
Goals came from Buckingham (2), Rattenbury (2), Fretwell, Jones and Moore, the Under-18 side debuting with a strong winning start.
Manager Willis gave his account of the proceedings: “We started slowly and were put under pressure early in the game. Wath pressed hard and were tough and combative.
“We eventually started to put the ball on the floor and play our football with some good combinations, and we created a number of chances before opening the scoring with a neat finish after a cross from the left at the back post by Fretwell.
“We continued to dominate the ball and created a few more good chances, before tidy footwork in the box for Buckingham through a crowd to get the second. A shot by Birks fell to Rattenbury who arrowed a shot to the far corner from outside of the box for the third.
“Wath continued to play direct with their 4-2-3-1 formation and they nearly had a good chance, but our centre-backs recovered well. A cross-field delivery fell straight to Moore who controlled the ball and passed it into the corner from close range.
“We started the second half slowly again, and under intense pressure, a rash push gave away a penalty, which Wath scored.
“This gave us the kick we needed and we went forward at will, with goals from Jones, Buckingham and Rattenbury.
“We had some good approach play, but we were a little wasteful in front of goal where we should have scored more.
“Overall, it was a positive result and some good performances for our first league game. We have things to work on but every player deserves credit for the result.
The Under-18’s next face Wickersley Youth on Sunday, 15th September at Wickersley School with a 10am kick-off.
