Deegan Atherton has started the last two games as he replaced the injured Ben Rhodes at right-back last Saturday against Belper Town, and the youngster has really held his own with a great performance against Wisbech Town and a Man of the Match performance in the Tigers’ 2-0 away win against Spalding United.
Kyle Jordan said on his performance: “Deegan Atherton deserves special praise as he hasn’t grumbled one bit all season, and he’s probably the most unlucky out of everyone in that he hasn’t found himself in the team every week, due to Ben Rhodes coming in and doing very well. Deegan was unbelievable today and on Wednesday night too; I can’t ask for more from anyone.”
Deegan expressed that the Tigers’ display was a fantastic team performance which helped them win the game against Spalding.
Atherton stated: “To be fair, I thought everyone gave 100%, it was a great team performance. Everyone won their individual battles, everyone gave that 100% and the team spirit is good, which is all you need in a team.
“You obviously know when you do good on the pitch. Rhodesy [Ben Rhodes] has done very well and has been unlucky to get injured, which means I get a chance and I need to take it and do what I can for the side. If I can keep doing well then I will hopefully keep my shirt. Ben is a great player, but it’s that competition for places which is all part of being a team, really.
“You could tell they [The Spalding wingers] were good, but I thought me and Lynny [Lynton Karkach] played really good together – great communication between us. Our shape was very good today which made it a great team performance.”
Next up for the Tigers is a home tie against Stamford AFC, who travel to Sandy Lane after exiting the FA Cup at the hands of Boston United.
Deegan is hoping for more of the same in order to get three points on Wednesday night.
“All the teams are good teams at this level. We just need to focus on us and what we do best, just like we did today against Spalding, and see where it takes us going forward.”
