Ryan’s late strike sends Worksop into the next round Owen Ryan’s 83rd minute strike helped the Tigers progress into the second round of the League Cup as Worksop Town beat Mansfield Hosiery Mills 2-1 at the Fieldings. Both sides started the game frustrated in the opening stages; Worksop enjoyed large spells of possession in the first 10 minutes of the game but were reduced to long-range efforts with Mansfield Hosiery Mills’ resolute defending. The first chance of the game fell to the Tigers and the in-form team took full advantage. A great build up of play down the right-hand side resulted in a lovely lofted cross to Sam Jones, who was waiting at the back post. The captain cut inside and hit a thunderbolt that struck the crossbar. From the resulting cross back into the area, the ball found midfielder Jack Morton who calmly steered his header past the helpless Mills keeper. On the half-hour, striker Isaac Darien beat his man and was chopped down on the edge of the Mansfield box. Alister Haydock stepped up and saw his effort spilled by the hosts’ goalkeeper but the Tigers couldn’t capitalise on the rebound. Worksop should have doubled their advantage five minutes before the interval. A lovely ball into the Mills box found Darien six yards out and the young striker hit a great effort on goal with his left boot, but this was matched by a terrific save by Hosiery’s number one who palmed the ball to safety. Mansfield came out the traps running in the second half and grabbed themselves a shock equaliser. The hosts attacked down the right and an explosive effort on goal was matched by an outstanding save from Walker to push it wide. From the corner, Mansfield played a lovely lofted ball to the back post where the Mills number 8 saw a bullet header hit the roof of the net. Moments later Mansfield should have found themselves in front. Sloppy defending from the Tigers found Mills’ number 9 through on goal, however some last ditch defending from Sam Kirk resulted in the youngster winning the ball, but the deflection almost undeservedly resulted in an own goal. Walker kept the Tigers on level terms after his third fantastic save in the second half. Mansfield almost got themselves in front once again as a thunderous shot from Mansfield’s number 10 was heading into the top corner before Walker clawed the ball away to safety. Against the run of play, the Tigers got their noses in front courtesy of a peach of a strike. Owen Ryan collected the ball 20 yards out and drove towards the Mansfield box where his curling effort was too much for the Mansfield ‘keeper, giving the young Tigers the lead once more. The young Tigers should have sealed the tie after a lovely move through the middle of the park. Finley Barker almost made a name for himself after going through on goal, but the youngster couldn’t convert his one-on-one. Worksop held on to put their name in the hat. Line-up: Walker, Riley, Wood (Rattenberg), Thompson, Kirk, McLaren, Jones (capt), Morton, Darrien, Haydock (Barker), Watkinson (Ryan) By Luke Atherton
