Worksop Town’s youngsters shone as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 to progress in the Sheffield Senior Cup.
The game was fairly flat and lacked enthusiasm from both sides. Red Rose were content with Worksop just holding possession in the middle.
A dull first half began with a chance from Max Pemberton, who fired wide of the upright from range.
Alister Haydock then dragged wide from twenty yards in only his second start for the Tigers.
The first major opportunity fell to Worksop. After a powerful run from Steven McDonnell, the forward pulled the ball back for Lynton Karkach who saw an effort blocked down low by Tyler Bates.
The home side took the lead on the half-hour mark as McDonnell connected with Karkach’s free-kick to send the ball past the ‘keeper. This was McDonnell’s first goal since returning to the club.
Ecclesfield’s first chance of the game fell to Luke Webster who poked Carlton Carty’s deflected cross wide of the far post.
Ten minutes after the break, Karkach put breathing space between the sides as he added a second. McDonnell drilled the ball into the area where Karkach faked a shot in order to take the ball around Tyler Bates before slipping the ball under Bark.
Connor Brunt forced a great save out of Christian Bark who pushed the striker’s effort wide of his near post.
Haydock then rattled the crossbar with a curling shot from the edge of the box.
Chris Lewis then tested the gloves of Zac Walker as following a clearance from Pemberton, he volleyed towards goal, the shot held at the midriff by the Worksop number one.
The Tigers confirmed their place in the next round with a goal in stoppage time, as Ben Rhodes’ run from deep ended with the full-back drilling the ball under the goalkeeper for his first goal for the club.
