Deegan Atherton has been named as October Player of the Month.
After some very impressive displays in defence, whether being deployed at right-back or centre-half, Deegan has been exceptional and a stand-out player for the month of October.
Atherton stated: “It was a great month for me. I have been playing centre-half again, but everyone has been helping me out and talking to me during the game. It was a decent month for the team as well and not just me.
“A lot of people might not know but when I was growing up, I was a centre-half and it has only been the last three seasons where I have played right-back, so at first it was just about getting back used to it. Playing there before helped, which was good.
“It is fantastic playing centre-back with “Vank” [Steven Wankiewicz]. Steve is a great player, a great person, and is always helping me out by talking to me and cheering me on, always telling me when I am doing something wrong and what I need to do to correct that.”
The month began with an emphatic 4-1 victory away at Market Drayton Town before advancing in the FA Trophy and Sheffield Senior Cup with victories over Kendal Town and Athersley Recreation respectively. However, October ended with a defeat to Carlton Town and exiting the FA Trophy with a 4-1 loss away at Whitby Town.
Atherton also mentioned Saturday’s win and what the Tigers must do over the Christmas period to climb up the table.
He continued: “It was a great result against Cleethorpes Town — who were a great team, as you could tell — but we managed to stop them. We played great and we just need to keep pushing on now. Last season we started to pick up over Christmas and hopefully we can do the same this year.”
The award has been delayed due to the recent bad weather, meaning we were unable to hand it out.
The winner for the month of November will be announced next week.
