Worksop Town Under-21s suffered their first back-to-back defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss against Handsworth FC at Olivers Mount.

A second-half goal from Callum Walton was the difference between the two sides, after numerous chances went begging in the second period for Worksop.

Worksop started the game on the front foot and should’ve found themselves ahead.

The first real chance for Worksop fell in the 15th minute. A great move down the left-hand side ended with first-team left-back Niall Smith, who whipped a delightful ball into the Handsworth box, which found striker Issac Darien, who put his effort over the bar from five yards out.

Handsworth had their heads in their hands on the half-hour mark, after almost stealing an unlikely lead.

The hosts linked up well down the right, and an in-swinging cross from winger Rene Marsden found Callum Walton, whose thunderbolt smashed against the Worksop bar, onto the line, and away to safety.

Worksop could have and should have found themselves in front just before half-time.

The move started down the right after some great link-up play. Warwick Wood crossed an inviting ball into the feet of attacker Joel Cousins, whose effort was met by a terrific save from former Worksop ‘keeper James Gamble.

It was a bright start from the young Tigers in the opening stages of the second half.

From a through-ball,Darien directed a header backwards into the path of Cousins. The explosive striker bore down on goal, beating Handsworth goalkeeper Gamble to the ball, but couldn’t find his feet in order to finish the move. When Cousins eventually pulled the trigger, his effort was cleared off the line.

The game started to stretch and Handsworth took advantage with their first major effort on goal.

Handsworth broke away from a Worksop attack, working the ball down the right. A great ball into the Worksop box found winger Walton, whose fist touch set him up for a cool finish past Worksop goalkeeper Zac Walker.

Worksop tried to get back into the game when Darien found himself some space to hit a fizzing effort that was palmed away for a corner, which came to nothing.

Worksop failed to create anything more, leading to a second defeat of the season. However, they put in a much stronger performance after last week’s 5-0 drubbing to the same opposition.
