Worksop Town Under-21s ended a run of back-to-back defeats as they beat Swallownest Under-21s 3-1 in Rotherham.

Two early goals from Warwick Wood and Joel Cousins settled Worksop, Swallownest replied on the half-hour mark, before a second-half Alister Haydock penalty sealed all three points for Worksop.

Worksop drew first blood in the fifth minute. A flicked header to the edge of the six-yard box found Wood, whose bullet header was too much for the Swallownest shot-stopper.

The young Tigers doubled their advantage just 10 minutes into the game. Cousins collected the ball 20 yards out and rode a tackle, before the talisman finished the move with a lovely finish into the back of net.

Swallownest replied in fine fashion from a set-piece. A lovely floated ball into the box found the hosts’ number 9, who guided his effort past Tigers ‘keeper Zac Walker.

Worksop went close following a foul on the edge of the Swallownest box on Worksop midfielder Alister Haydock. Haydock picked himself up to take the free-kick and unleashed a lovely effort that smashed against the bar and rebounded out for a goal kick.

The second half started quite evenly, with both teams trying to get a foothold in the game.

Despite the tight start to the half, Worksop got their two-goal advantage back.

A great through-ball found the path of Thompson, who was then taken out by the hosts’ goalkeeper inside the Swallownest box. Up stepped Haydock, who calmly slotted his finish into the bottom corner.

Sub and first team manager Kyle Jordan almost put the game to bed.

The experienced striker was through on goal and rounded the on-rushing goalkeeper before floating a guided effort that was inches off hitting the target.

During the closing stages of the game things started to open up. Swallownest had a golden opportunity to get back into the game with ten minutes to play.

A great move down the left found the Swallownest left-winger who slid his effort through the legs of the out-coming Walker; however, Liam Smart was on the line to steer the ball away from the goal.
