Worksop Town bowed out of the Integro League Cup in the third round, losing 2-1 to Matlock Town.
Worksop drew first blood in the opening stages of the game.
The move started down the right and ended in a lovely ball into the feet of Freddy Tracey, who pivoted on the spot and hit a tremendous low strike into the bottom corner of the goal.
The visitors replied instantaneously, as a teasing run down the left by Sam Scrivens saw the winger cut inside and unleash a curling effort that was too much for Tigers ‘keeper Zac Walker as it nestled in the bottom corner.
Matlock slowly began to take control of the game, showing why they’re an established Northern Premier Division side, and they extended their lead on 12 minutes.
A cross from a Matlock corner fell to Scrivens, whose effort looped over Walker and into the roof of the net.
After a bright start to the game, the evening turned sour for Worksop on the 21-minute mark.
Striker Craig Mitchell was shown a red card for violent conduct. The referee thought Mitchell had elbowed Adam Yates and gave him his marching orders.
Matlock started turning the screw: the visitors were in full momentum and should have capitalised, however, they were met with a string of fine saves by Under-21s goalkeeper Walker.
James Tague latched onto a ball through from Goldthorp and hit a first-time attempt on goal that was saved by Walker, who then jumped up and got across to save Scrivens’ follow-up with his feet.
Moments later, the goalkeeper closed down the on-rushing Marcus Marshall; however, a tackle from Ben Rhodes took the ball past Walker and as Marshall shot, the goalkeeper threw out a hand in order to push the ball wide.
The second half started on an even keel. Worksop were attempting to settle themselves to set up a platform for a response.
The Tigers started to see more of the ball and started pressing for the equaliser. Steve Woolley in particular was trying to pull the strings from the left-back position, however the Worksop attacks came to nothing.
Worksop got a corner in the dying stages of the game. The set-piece was pumped into the Matlock box, with the ball falling loose into the middle of the Matlock goal, however Steven McDonnell was unable to sort out his feet to capitalise on the loose ball.
