Match Report

Even stevens at Sandy Lane as Worksop gain a point against table toppers Pickering Town.

An early penalty from Alec Denton was cancelled out by a second half strike from Pickering striker Nick Thompson.

Worksop started the more brightly, their first attack on goal resulted in a penalty for the hosts, Pickering Town defender took down midfielder James Jepson as he skipped into the box giving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

Denton buried the early penalty into the bottom right-hand of the goal to send Worksop into dream land and an early lead, the prolific striker again choosing to celebrate with fans behind the goal.

Tigers almost doubled their lead 25 minutes in, a fantastic cross deep into the Pickering box met the head of Jordan Turner whose header looped over the Pikes goal, but the score line stayed 1-0.

The opening stages of the second half was a flat encounter with neither side giving anything away in the final third of each half, however, both sides looked comfortable in possession with the home side wary of impending pressure to come.

The visitors did get back on level terms just before the hour mark, a high ball came into the Worksop box and Alexander came out to collect the ball but an unusual mistake meant he spilt the ball into the path of Thompson who was waiting underneath the big goalkeeper to poke the ball into the Worksop goal for the equaliser.

The hosts seemed to settle for a point after that but were intent on countering against Pickering when given opportunity, Denton made a bursting run towards goal after a fabulous ball over the top by Matty Thompson, he shrugged off several Pickering defenders before being man handled out side the Pikes box.

The visitors continued to press looking for that all important winner but the home side held out and defended magnificently to end the game level pegging. Overall a draw was a fair reflection on the game, a valuable point for the Tigers who look onwards and upwards to the Rainworth match on Saturday.
