Match Report

A glorious May afternoon didn’t reflect the result as Worksop Town succumbed to a 13th defeat in 14 games.

The Tigers lost 3-1 against already relegated Parkgate FC, after a even first-half, Worksop midfielder Charlie Baird gave us the lead just before the interval before a nightmare second half. Goals from Dan Flynn, Brandon Baggles and Martin Brissett made sure all three points stayed in Rotherham.

The game started off with no tempo as both sides looked to get a foothold in the game, both sides looked comfortable on the ball in the opening stages but neither side could carve out any chances.

Worksop continued to pose a threat down the flanks, half-way through the first-half Baird whipped in a dangerous cross that couldn’t meet a Tiger head.

Several moments later Worksop produced a clever move down the left hand flank, fan favourite Michael Trench’s surged down the wing and his cross caused havoc with an attempted clearance from the Parkgate defender that unfortunately fell into the hands of hosts number 1.

What a goal, that man Baird collected the ball deep in the Parkgate box, he drove the ball towards the touch-line before an unbelievable turn which was matched by a terrific finish, tucking the ball under the Steelmen keeper to put the Tigers in front just before half-time.

Worksop came out of the traps and piled the pressure on the Parkgate goal, Trench’s teasing effort from a 20 yard free-kick was matched by a brilliant save by the Parkgate keeper.

Several moments later skipper Mitch Husbands outmuscled the Steelman defender, he turned and hit a fierce strike that produced another great save from the Parkgate goalie down to his right.

The host’s drew back on level terms a low cross into the Worksop box from a corner, wasn’t cleared from the Tigers and Dan Flynn was the first to pounce, forcing the ball over the line.

After the goal Parkgate looked comfortable after the equaliser and took the lead in the 72nd minute, a clearance by Worksop keeper Josh Diggles the ball fell kindly to Brandon Baggles who tucked away his finish to put the already relegated Parkgate in-front.

A poor second-half play was finished off with arguably the best goal of the game with a few minutes left of the game. Martin Brissett tucked away a fantastic strike that rifled into the corner giving Diggles no chance.

After the third goal the wind was blown from Worksop’s sail and we couldn’t get anything going, despite the result it was a nice touch from the players to come over shake the Worksop fans hands and thanked them for the brilliant support, onwards and upwards to next season hopefully a great pre-season will put us in good stead for the new campaign.
