Worksop v Frickley – Doodson Cup
The Tigers made it safely through to the 4th Round of the Doodson Cup and an away trip to Farsley FC following a comfortable 4-1 win over local rivals Frickley.
Both managers took the opportunity to rest key players, especially Simon Clark who utilised his squad to the full, including giving full debuts to Ashley Timms and U19 prospect Adam Powell.
Worksop dominated the opening stages, Powell shooting just wide from 20 yards, then Jake Scott was only denied when Patrece Liburd diverted his shot for a corner.
As the home side continued to press Darren Shirt was twice in action saving low down at his near post to deny Jamie Jackson, before tipping a Lee Beeson header over for a corner.
The nearest Frickley came to scoring was a Terry Barwick header over the bar.
David Buck came to Shirt’s rescue as he just got to the ball as Lee Potts appeared certain to score after the ‘keeper had spilled Matt Telling’s shot.
Shirt was soon back in action turning Jackson’s shot from the edge of the box round the post for a corner. However from the resulting Beeson corner Adie Hawes headed powerfully home to give the Tigers the lead on 19 minutes.
Two minutes later Jackson doubled the lead, running onto Telling’s excellent through ball to slot home through the onrushing ‘keepers legs.
It was 3-0 after 26 minutes as Telling fired home from 8 yards after Shirt had parried Potts shot.
As half time approached Timms had to be alert to tip Liburd’s header over for a corner, then Barwick shot just over from distance.
Frickley started the second half brightly, Liburd putting a header just over the bar, then on 52 substitute, Luke Hinsley, reduced the arrears cutting inside past Lee Ridley before firing home low into the bottom corner giving Timms no chance.
On 55 minutes Clark introduced another of the U19’s, Reece Twell in place of Nathan Modest.
Four minutes later Jackson picked up the ball on the left, outpacing the defence before firing home into the bottom corner, giving Shirt no chance to make it 4-1.
With the three-goal lead restored Clark introduced two more youngsters, Ash Jackson for his debut and Khalid Alali in place of Beeson and Ridley respectively.
Two of the youngsters combined to nearly made it 5-1 as Twell flashed a shot wide after being set up by an excellent through ball by Ash Jackson.
It was then the two Jacksons who combined well; Ash’s excellent header setting up Jamie whose shot was well saved by Shirt.
