WORKSOP TOWN 0 – 2 NANTWICH TOWN
Evo Stik Northern Premier League – Saturday 23rd February 2013
Worksop Town lost to lowly Nantwich Town at Sandy Lane on Saturday putting a big dent in their play-off hopes.
The visitors had lost their previous five games and had not scored for over 500 minutes but two late goals gained them three valuable points.
The Tigers were still missing Luke Shiels and Leon Mettam but Ashley Burbeary was on the bench and new loan signing Cecil Nyoni was in midfield.
The majority of the attacking came from the Tigers but the final ball into the box was poor all afternoon.
Phil Roe had a shot blocked in the second minute, Nathan Modest also had an effort blocked and Nyoni shot wide from 20 yards in the opening twenty minutes.
In a rare attack from the visitors Brandon Windsor should have done better when clear through but he shot straight at Paul Bastock.
Two excellent chances fell to Lee Potts but the first effort from the winger following a flick on from Tom Denton was blocked and then he volleyed over from another Denton flick.
With two minutes of the first half remaining visiting keeper Jon Brain made a great save from Nyoni’s shot, both the keeper and ball colliding with the post. Following treatment to Brain, Steve Towers corner found the head of Denton but a defender cleared off the line.
The second half was much the same as the first with the Tigers on top but failing to capitalise on their superiority.
Denton had another header cleared off the line he then headed over the bar before a lovely flowing move involving Roe, Potts and Burbeary, on as substitute for Modest, ended with Towers shooting just over the bar.
On 70 minutes a great chance for the Tigers came as a 25 yard shot from Burbeary was well saved by Brain but he failed to hold onto the ball and Denton coming in at speed could only poke the ball wide.
With eight minutes remaining the visitors took the lead. A corner on the left found centre back Darren Moss and he headed past Bastock from 12 yards.
The Tigers pushed hard for an equaliser but got caught out in the first minute of added time. A breakaway from substitute Simon Everall down the right, he found another substitute Josh Lane who scored from close range.
